PFAS – Ardennes: the prefect bans the spreading of sludge

🛑 In response to PFAS contamination in 13 communes in the Ardennes, the prefecture announced on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, a ban on the spreading of sludge within the affected area to prevent any additional input of PFAS into soils and drinking-water catchments during the investigation phase.

🛡️ Banning sludge spreading is a precautionary approach essential to avoid potential additional inputs.

📝 Context

Since 10/07/2025, tap water has been unfit for consumption in these communes.📊 In February 2025, a record concentration of 2,729 ng/L of PFOA was measured in the commune of Villy, which holds the unfortunate record for the most PFAS-contaminated water in France.

⏩ What changes starting now

  • 🚫 Immediate suspension of sludge spreading in the targeted area as a precautionary measure.
  • 💧 Strengthened coordination between State services and the affected communes for monitoring of catchments and informing the public.
  • 🔬 Continued inspections and analyses to document and objectively assess the extent of contamination and to guide upcoming decisions.

🌍 PFAS represent a global challenge where science, regulation, and society must move forward together.

📌 One thing is certain: to act, you need to know.
🔬 Measuring is the start of any effective response.

🛠️ Analytical contribution of fluorine NMR: CASC4DE helps push analytical limits for proactive management of PFAS pollution and offers non-targeted quantification (organic fluorine, PFAS) for a better understanding of these emerging contaminations.
